Responsibilities:
Knowledge of commonly used clerical and office procedures sufficient to refer callers or file material in alphabetical, numerical, or chronological order. Knowledge is also used to provide routine and factual information to callers as specifically authorized.
Familiarity with office machines sufficient to perform recurring operations as well as user-selected custom features, e.g., copy enlargement and reduction. Assignments require some previous training or experience.
Skill in operating a computer terminal, personal computer, electronic typewriter, or dedicated word processor using a standard typewriter style keyboard with additional function keys to produce a wide range of documents requiring use of advanced software functions to enhance productivity or to satisfy the needs of complex formats, e.g., automatic generation of indices and tables of contents; importation of graphics; creation of glossaries; and precise alignment of multiple columns.
Knowledge of office automation systems to use several types of software for various office needs. Employs processing procedures and function keys for performing a substantial range of functions within each software type.
Knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare material correctly from a variety of draft or preliminary sources.
Knowledge of office practices and clerical procedures.
Additionally, will be introduced to c ases that involve some of the most complex and difficult in the United States Attorney's office that may require organizing, tracking and analyzing thousands or tens of thousands of items of evidence, millions of data elements, or involve untried or especially novel computer or digital imaging applications. Automated support is necessary to prepare, organize, index, develop, and manage exhibits, evidence, or other data relevant to cases presented before a jury, grand jury or in other legal proceedings.
Will provide technical assistance to AUSA's to facilitate the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with e-Discovery and other procedural requirements. Requires the ability to research legal and factual issues to design case litigation support approaches which may include: (1) researching and summarizing factual aspects of cases, analyzing reports, testimony, interviews, and files; and (2) performing research for pleadings, memoranda of law, trial briefs, subpoenas, complaints, indictments, motion papers, and responses to defense motions.
Ability to analyze legal issues, factual issues, and subject matter details involved in a case in order to determine the data needed, methods of obtaining data, and the relevance of data already available. Ability to evaluate relevant information, and to summarize substantive forfeiture information to assist in case preparation, and to ensure that information is lawfully released or withheld.
Based on knowledge of the government= s case and knowledge of the characteristics of electronically stored information (ESI), assists in eliciting the most complete and useful response (discovery, interrogatories, etc.) from litigation parties and non-parties.
Helps AUSAs specify what type of ESI to request and how to capture and preserve metadata from discovery provided by opposing parties. Drafts interrogatories and other requests for information. Evaluates legal issues and identifies potential sources of information that may be beneficial for the government s position in the case.
In preparation for pre-trial conferences, recommends to AUSAs the particular formats in which ESI should be produced by opposing parties and recommends the formats in which the government should produce information as discovery for opposing parties.
Identifies, recommends and utilizes the optimal software application for the compilation, analysis and presentation of evidence, such as Concordance, iConnect, CaseMap, TimeMap, PowerPoint and Sanction, based upon the platform= s effectiveness in (1) facilitating the analysis, storage and retrieval of critical information, (2) presenting complex and voluminous evidence, (3) producing graphic demonstrative evidence, and (4) meeting individual user needs.
Assists AUSAs in developing the most effective trial presentations using the ALS resources available in the USAO.
Assists attorneys and legal support staff in organizing and processing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a data base. Ensures documents are organized and processed for efficient automated storage, search and retrieval by converting images for full-text retrieval, developing logical schemes for coding documents, linking and cross-referencing documents, etc. with a thorough understanding of the case and the legal issues specified by attorneys, develops search parameters and criteria that filter data effectively to produce targeted information.
In preparation for AUSA review, compiles outgoing discovery in compliance with the Federal Rules of Criminal and Civil Procedure and in accordance with stipulations and/or court orders. Works with client agencies to facilitate production of discovery in a timely and effective manner.
Prepare and maintains a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., witness lists, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and subpoenas, by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules.
In coordination with the IT Manager, manages and operates a variety of computer hardware such as printers, plotters, audio-visual devices, and other state-of-the-art equipment to conceptualize exhibits and complete special presentation projects. Applies knowledge of U.S. Attorney and court programs, automation requirements and characteristics to resolve problems.

Qualifications:
Requires paralegal certificate. An equivalent level of legal training may be substituted with the approval of the COR.
At least one year of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful. Automated litigation support experience valued.
Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources.
Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
The clearance level required is dependent on the type of clearance supported by our client.
